Butterfly valves, which are a very popular and very efficient type of flow control device, are used in many industries at present. As a leading butterfly valve manufacturers in India, Speciality Valve brings to you high-performance butterfly valves that we designed to fulfil tough industrial needs.
What is a Butterfly Valve?
A butterfly valve is a quarter-turn rotation type of valve that is used to control, modify, or open and close flow. We see a disc that is mounted on a central shaft that rotates to either open or shut the passageway. Also, this design features low pressure drop and very fast operation, which is what makes it very much at home in tight spaces.
In some uses, butterfly valves are directional, which is a note of particularity when used in association with actuators or when flow direction is critical. For the main use, however, they do work in either direction.
What Are Butterfly Valves Used For?
Butterfly valves are found in water supply systems, HVAC, chemical plants, food processing, and also in marine and fire protection. They are very versatile, which in turn puts them at home with a wide range of fluids (including gas, water, oil, and chemicals).
One outstanding benefit is that of flow control. Indeed, we see that butterfly valves are used for flow control also in large diameter pipelines, which require a minimum pressure drop.
How Butterfly Valve Works
The butterfly valve functions by rotating a disc, which moves it from a 90-degree off position to either allow or prevent flow. The shaft, which in that case also serves as a rotation point, is usually put in use with an actuator or a manual handle. In the open state, the disc aligns with the flow path; in the closed it turns to break it off.
Today, we see that modern butterfly valves come with actuators that automate their function via electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic systems.
Components of Butterfly Valves
- Valve Body: Usually out of ductile iron, carbon steel, or stainless steel.
- Disc: The moving part that either does or does not allow flow.
- Seat: A rubber or PTFE lining that seals against the disc.
- Stem/Shaft: Connects the disc with the actuator or handle.
- Actuator/Handle: Manually or automatically controlled.
Types of Butterfly Valves
Butterfly valves, which we have in many types to fit your specific pressure, temperature, and flow requirements.
- Wafer Butterfly Valves: Compact and affordable, great for tight spaces.
- Lug-Type Butterfly Valves: Used in which have bolt-through flanges.
- Double Offset Butterfly Valves: For high-pressure systems.
- Triple Offset Butterfly Valves: For zero leakage in high-pressure and high-temperature applications.
- Rubber-Lined Butterfly Valves: Great for corrosive fluids.
- Electric-Operated Butterfly Valves: Suitable for automated control in industry.
Industrial Applications of Butterfly Valves
Butterfly valves are essential in:
- Water treatment plants
- Food and beverage industry
- Chemical processing
- Oil and gas pipelines
- Fire protection systems
- Marine industry
In large-scale municipal water treatment plants, butterfly valves of wafer type are used to regulate water flow between purification stages. Their wear-resistant structure, easy maintenance, and fast action make them very suitable for this role.
Butterfly Valve Vs Gate Valve
While we see both butterfly and gate valves used for on-off control, what is different is their structure and function:
Feature | Butterfly Valve | Gate Valve |
Operation | Quarter-turn (90°) | Multi-turn (360°) |
Space Required | Compact | Bulkier |
Flow Control | Moderate to Good | Poor (not ideal for throttling) |
Maintenance | Low | Moderate |
Pressure Drop | Low | Higher than butterfly valves |
Cost | Economical | Relatively higher |
In many industrial applications, we see that what is preferred about the butterfly valves is those designed for high performance because of their compact design and quick operation.
Are Butterfly Valves Directional?
Butterfly valves are typically bi-directional, which means they can manage flow in both directions. However, the flow direction can influence sealing performance based on factors like the seat design, disc profile, and application pressure. Certain designs, particularly high-performance or offset butterfly valves, might have a preferred flow direction to ensure optimal sealing and minimise wear. It’s always a good idea to consult the manufacturer’s flow direction guidelines before you install one.
Can a Butterfly Valve Be Used for Flow Control?
Absolutely! A butterfly valve can be utilised for flow control, especially in systems that need throttling. While they might not be as precise as globe or control valves, butterfly valves provide quick shutoff and decent control over flow rates, particularly in larger pipeline systems. For more accurate regulation, high-performance double-offset or triple-offset butterfly valves are the way to go, as they offer improved sealing and flow modulation capabilities.
