Para Archery Assistive Devices

Each one fits the athlete’s classification and ability. By using adaptive gear, archers can focus on their skills without physical barriers. This allows more people to take part and enjoy the sport. It shows how support tools can open real opportunities in archery.

Visually Impaired (VI) Class – Blindfolds & Spotter Assistance

VI archers compete using unique support systems. They must wear a blindfold, even if they have partial vision. This levels the field by removing visual advantage. They rely on tactile bow sights and guidance from a spotter.

Prosthetics & Arm/Elbow Splints

Some para archers use prosthetic limbs or splints. These aid control and movement of the bow or string. A bow-arm prosthetic may be used to hold the bow steady. A string-arm prosthetic helps with drawing and releasing. Elbow or arm splints support weak or limited joints.

They allow a more stable and repeatable shot. Each device must be customized to the archer’s needs. But it also has to meet competition rules. No device may add unfair mechanical advantage. Everything is reviewed and approved by officials.

Assistants & Arrow‑Agents

Some archers need help during matches. That’s where assistants or arrow agents come in. They help with tasks like nocking arrowsscoring, or retrieving arrows. But they can’t interfere with aiming or shooting. The assistant must stand in a designated space.

They follow strict rules to avoid giving advantage. Coaching assistants may give advice between ends. But they must stay silent during actual shooting. All roles are defined by World Archery rules. Violating these can lead to penalties.
